What Is an IGI Diamond Certificate?
IGI stands for the International Gemological Institute, a global gemological organization founded in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1975. IGI provides grading and identification services for diamonds, gemstones and jewelry, alongside gemological education.
IGI was also an early pioneer in laboratory-grown diamond grading, introducing dedicated grading services for laboratory-grown diamonds in 2005.
Today, an IGI laboratory-grown diamond report records the individual characteristics of a diamond and identifies it as laboratory-grown. It also evaluates the stone according to the familiar 4Cs: Carat, Color, Clarity and Cut.
Strictly speaking, IGI refers to the document as a grading report. You will often hear it called a certificate in everyday conversation. Either way, its purpose is the same: to give you an independent record of the diamond you are purchasing.
It is important to note that a grading report is not an appraisal and does not determine the monetary value of a diamond. Instead, it documents its gemological characteristics.
Why Does a Lab-Grown Diamond Need a Certificate?
A laboratory-grown diamond is a diamond — its origin is simply different.
Natural diamonds form beneath the earth over geological periods of time. Laboratory-grown diamonds are created in a controlled technological environment. How to Read an IGI Diamond Certificate

1. Origin
Start by looking for the identification of the diamond as laboratory-grown.
This is what distinguishes a lab-grown diamond from a natural diamond on the report.
The report number also provides a unique reference for the individual diamond. IGI can use this information to connect the report with the stone itself.
2. Shape and Cutting Style
The report identifies the diamond’s shape and cutting style.
You might see terms such as Round Brilliant, Oval, Emerald or another fancy shape.
Shape is primarily a question of personal taste. Cutting style describes how the diamond has been faceted to interact with light.

3. Carat Weight
